CD Mafra should have taken the lead after just seconds, but after the Portuguese wasted that chance, Brentford’s youngsters took over. They pressed with high aggressiveness and Matra’s player had great problems playing out from the back. The English created a few half-chances, but the big opportunities failed to materialise. Halfway through the half the game had leveled out and after 33 minutes Rodrigo Matos scored the only goal of the first half.
After the break, the Portuguese again showed great efficiency and increased their lead after a minute. Brentford created unbelievable chances without being able to put the ball in the net. As manager Neil MacFarlane told The Atlantic Cup after the game, he felt they could have played until tomorrow morning without scoring. At the same time, he was very satisfied with how the team carried out the match, it was only the goals that were missing. One person who was really pleased was the Portuguese’s first goalscorer Rodrigo Matos, who emphasized the importance of facing English teams and a completely different style of play to what they are used to.
